Prosumer

products aimed at users who want more capability than consumer gear but less complexity than industrial equipment.

Prosumer describes products built for users who need more capability than ordinary consumer gear but do not want the cost, complexity, or management overhead of industrial or enterprise equipment. In practice, this often includes higher-end routers, cameras, printers, NAS devices, and smart-home hubs with advanced settings, remote management, and richer software features.

In cyber security, prosumer devices matter because they sit in a risk-heavy middle ground: they are powerful enough to be attractive targets, but they are often deployed with consumer-style habits such as weak passwords, limited patching, and exposed cloud access. Attackers commonly probe these systems for default credentials, vulnerable web interfaces, and insecure remote administration. Defenders should treat prosumer hardware like small-scale infrastructure: change defaults, keep firmware current, disable unnecessary services, separate it from critical networks, and review vendor support and update policies before deployment.
