Procurement Processes

The purchasing and vendor-selection steps where security requirements can be enforced before systems are deployed.

Procurement processes are the purchasing and vendor-selection steps an organization uses before a system is deployed. In cybersecurity, this is where security requirements can be written into contracts, product evaluations, and acceptance criteria, so a tool or service must meet baseline controls before it reaches production.

This matters because many attacks exploit weak suppliers, insecure default settings, missing patch support, or products that cannot be updated safely. Good procurement can require features such as encryption, logging, multi-factor authentication, vulnerability disclosure, and timely patching. It can also block risky dependencies and reduce long-term lock-in. In the post-quantum cryptography transition, procurement is especially important: buyers can demand crypto agility, support for new algorithms, and a roadmap for replacing vulnerable cryptography. When security is enforced early, defenders avoid expensive retrofits and reduce the chance that unsafe technology is introduced into the environment.
