Privilege reduction means giving users, services, and tools only the access they need to do a specific job. It is a core security principle because every extra permission becomes extra damage potential if an account, script, API key, or AI assistant is compromised.
In real attacks, privilege reduction limits blast radius. A stolen help-desk account should not be able to disable logging, access production secrets, or create new administrators. A compromised automation tool should not be able to move freely across systems. Defenders apply this through least privilege, role-based access control, separate admin accounts, just-in-time elevation, and tight permissions on cloud and AI workflows. In fast-moving environments, especially where AI tools can act on code or infrastructure, reducing privilege helps contain abuse before it spreads.
