Precision engineering

the practice of designing and building systems to exact tolerances.

Precision engineering is the practice of designing and building systems to exact tolerances. It focuses on controlling dimensions, materials, energy, and process conditions so that components perform reliably, especially when very small variations can affect the result.

In cyber security, precision engineering matters when creating secure hardware, sensors, and manufacturing equipment: defects or unintended variation can affect reliability and, in some cases, expose security weaknesses. Attackers may exploit flaws in a device’s design or production, while defenders use tight process controls, testing, and verification to reduce those risks. In research involving ultrasound and microbubbles to make tiny devices, the term describes the need for careful control of physical effects; it does not, by itself, establish a particular method or security impact.
