Power conditioning is the set of equipment and controls that clean, stabilize, and regulate electrical power for sensitive systems. It can include voltage regulators, surge protection, uninterruptible power supplies, filters, and transfer controls that smooth out spikes, sags, noise, and brief outages. In data centers and industrial environments, well-conditioned power helps servers, network gear, and control devices run reliably.
It matters in cyber security because availability is often a physical as well as a digital problem. If power conditioning systems are misconfigured, exposed, or disrupted, they can trigger shutdowns, cause equipment to reboot, or create unsafe operating conditions. Attackers may target management interfaces, while defenders focus on segmentation, redundant feeds, and continuous monitoring of electrical status. In practice, power conditioning is part of the broader OT and facility layer that protects critical infrastructure from both accidental instability and deliberate interference.
