Policy versioning

Keeping track of which rule set was active when a decision should be made.

Policy versioning is the practice of recording which rule set was active when a system made, or should have made, a decision. In security and governance workflows, policies change over time: fraud thresholds, access rules, retention rules, and validation logic all get updated. Versioning preserves the exact policy snapshot tied to each event.

This matters because a decision is only defensible if it can be reconstructed under the correct rules. Without versioning, a model or analyst may be judged against a policy that did not exist yet, or worse, may apply outdated rules to current data. In attacks, adversaries can exploit this gap by replaying stale approvals, timing requests around rule changes, or feeding evidence that was valid under an old policy but not the current one. In defenses, policy versioning supports audits, incident review, and point-in-time checks by proving what was allowed, blocked, or required at the moment of inference.
