Policy-scoped control

A setting that applies through an administrative policy rather than as a one-off manual action.

A policy-scoped control is a security setting that is enforced through an administrative policy instead of a one-time manual action. Once enabled, the rule applies consistently to a defined group of users, devices, meetings, or services, and it can usually be managed from a central console or automation interface.

In cyber security, this matters because repeatable enforcement reduces drift and makes access decisions auditable. If a collaboration platform uses a policy-scoped control to block external bots, for example, the organization does not have to remember to reject each bot individually. The platform can apply the rule automatically, which helps defend against unsanctioned transcription tools, note-takers, or other automated participants that might expose confidential data. Attackers also care about these controls because they create friction at the point of entry and can force malicious automation into a lobby, approval flow, or denial state. Policy-scoped controls are powerful, but they still need testing, logging, and exception review to avoid blocking legitimate services or missing misclassified traffic.
