Point-of-sale terminal

The merchant device that reads a payment card and processes the transaction.

A point-of-sale terminal is the merchant device that reads a payment card and processes a transaction. In modern shops it may handle chip, magnetic stripe, or contactless NFC payments, and it makes a fast trust decision based on what the card presents and what the payment network expects.

This matters because the terminal is a key security boundary. If it is fooled, the attacker may get a transaction approved even when the card is expired, cloned, or being relayed from another device. In real attacks, criminals and researchers target terminals with relay attacks, skimming hardware, or malicious software that alters payment data. Defenses include strong card authentication, secure terminal software, tamper-resistant hardware, and checks that do not rely on a single signal such as the printed expiration date.
