Plugin attack surface

The extra code and features added by extensions, which can expand the number of places attackers can probe.

The plugin attack surface is the total set of extra code paths, inputs, permissions, and interfaces introduced by an extension. In practice, every upload form, API endpoint, admin page, webhook, or file handler added by a plugin gives attackers another place to probe for mistakes such as weak validation, unsafe deserialization, or arbitrary file upload.

This matters because plugins often sit inside an application’s trust boundary and handle sensitive workflows before users are fully authenticated. A flaw in one add-on can therefore expose the whole site, turning a convenience feature into an intrusion path. Defenders reduce plugin attack surface by installing only necessary extensions, keeping them updated, restricting writeable and executable directories, and reviewing logs for suspicious requests. In real attacks, adversaries often target these extra surfaces first because they are more complex, less audited than core software, and more likely to contain exploitable bugs.
