Playback timing

The sequence and speed at which video is shown, which can shape how well an experience functions.

Playback timing is the order and speed at which video frames, audio, and interactive cues are presented. In ordinary media it keeps sound and image synchronized; in interactive video or tape-based formats, it also determines when a prompt appears, how long a choice remains visible, and whether the experience stays usable. If timing drifts or varies, branches can be missed, inputs can arrive too late, and the content may fail even when the file itself is intact.

In cyber security, playback timing matters because timing can be part of the attack surface. Malicious media files may use unusual frame rates, delays, or cue timing to stress parsers, trigger desynchronization bugs, or behave differently in sandboxes and automated analyzers. Defenders look at timing to verify media integrity, spot malformed content, and test how players or decoders handle edge cases. In short, timing is not just a quality issue; it can affect reliability, detection, and exploitability.
