Ping

A command-line utility used to test whether a network host responds.

Ping is a command-line utility that tests whether a network host responds on a reachable IP path. It sends an ICMP Echo Request and waits for an Echo Reply, giving a quick answer about basic connectivity, latency, and packet loss. Because it is simple and widely available, ping is often the first check used when a connection fails or a service seems unreachable.

In cyber security, ping matters because it helps separate local problems from routing, firewall, or host issues during incident response and routine maintenance. Defenders use it to verify reachability, confirm that a network segment is live, and spot unexpected drops in response time. Attackers can also use ping during reconnaissance to map active hosts or test whether a target filters ICMP. For that reason, some environments block or rate-limit ping, while monitoring systems watch for unusual ICMP activity.
