Pentester

A security professional who designs and runs penetration tests, then interprets the results for defenders.

A pentester, or penetration tester, is a security professional who is authorized to simulate attacker behavior against a system, network, application, or process. The goal is not to cause damage or collect a long list of issues, but to prove which weaknesses are actually exploitable and how far an attacker could move if they were real.

Pentesters matter because they turn raw findings into evidence, risk, and priorities. In practice, they look for misconfigurations, weak credentials, missing patches, access-control flaws, and attack chains that connect small mistakes into a serious breach path. Good pentesting also depends on clear rules of engagement, careful validation, and reporting that helps defenders fix the right control, not just the loudest alert. In an AI-assisted workflow, the pentester still provides the judgment that turns automated output into a credible security assessment.
