PATH_CHALLENGE is a QUIC frame used during path validation. A QUIC endpoint sends it to check whether a network path is still reachable and stable, and it expects a matching PATH_RESPONSE in return. This helps the protocol confirm that traffic can safely move over a new route, such as after a network change or migration.
In security terms, PATH_CHALLENGE matters because path validation is a stateful control mechanism that can be driven by untrusted peers. If implementations allocate memory or perform repeated bookkeeping for each challenge, attackers may abuse that work to cause resource exhaustion and denial of service. Defenders watch for abnormal path-validation traffic, enforce strict limits on per-connection state, and keep QUIC libraries patched so routine connectivity checks do not become an attack surface.
