Passive accessory

A device that normally performs its job without added electronics or processing.

A passive accessory is a peripheral that normally does one job without added electronics, firmware, or processing. Examples include a basic cable, a simple adapter, or a mechanical dongle. In practice, “passive” means the device should not be able to think, store data, or generate signals on its own beyond what the host already provides.

This distinction matters in cyber security because simple accessories are easier to trust and inspect. Once a cable or adapter contains chips, memory, radios, or a display, it can do more than move power or data: it may identify itself, collect information, or hide malicious logic. Attackers sometimes abuse this by disguising active electronics as ordinary accessories. Defenders reduce risk by preferring truly passive hardware where possible, checking procurement specs, and inspecting suspicious peripherals instead of assuming every small accessory is harmless.
