Parental lock

An access-control feature that restricts device use or content based on set rules.

A parental lock is an access-control feature that limits device functions, content, or settings according to rules set by an owner or administrator. It may require a PIN, account approval, age filter, or other policy before a user can open apps, change configuration, or view restricted material.

In cyber security, parental locks matter because they are a common example of policy enforcement on consumer devices. They protect children, prevent unauthorized changes, and can reduce exposure to risky content or purchases. But they also create availability risk: if the passcode, account, or recovery method is lost, the device can become effectively unusable even though the hardware still works. Attackers may try to bypass these controls to gain broader device access, while defenders must design secure reset and transfer paths so legitimate owners can recover control. Strong access control is only safe when it is also recoverable.
