Parental authorization is consent or approval from a parent or legal guardian that allows a minor to access a service, product, or online feature. In cyber security, it is part of age-gating and child-safety controls, especially for social platforms, games, and connected devices. A secure implementation must confirm that the approver is legitimate, the minor is within scope, and the consent cannot be forged, replayed, or reused without permission.
Attackers may try to bypass this control by using fake identities, stolen guardian accounts, doctored documents, or weak email-based approval flows. Defenders reduce risk with step-up verification, signed consent records, audit logs, revocation handling, and data minimization. Good parental authorization protects minors while limiting how much sensitive personal data the service must collect and store.
