Overhang

a section of a printed object that extends outward without direct support beneath it.

An overhang is a section of a printed object that extends outward without direct support beneath it. In 3D printing, steep overhangs can sag, curl, or fail to bond cleanly because each new layer has less material to rest on than the layer below.

In cyber security, overhangs matter when additive manufacturing is used for housings, fixtures, tools, or other hardware tied to a trusted workflow. A bad geometry choice can weaken a part, create hidden defects, or force extra supports that increase cleanup and the chance of tampering. Attackers who can alter CAD files or slicer settings may exploit unsupported overhangs to cause print failures or produce brittle parts. Defenders reduce this risk with design-rule checks, slicer previews, support generation, and print-profile validation before fabrication starts.
