Overfishing

Fishing at a rate that exceeds what a stock can sustain over time.

Overfishing means taking fish at a rate faster than a stock can replenish itself. In fisheries management, the issue is not just how many fish remain, but whether fishing mortality stays within sustainable limits. When overfishing is happening, a population can shrink, recover more slowly, or collapse under continued pressure.

In cyber security, the term matters because modern fishing and traceability systems increasingly rely on digital records, sensors, and AI-assisted decisions. If catch data, vessel location, species labels, or quota reports are altered, missing, or delayed, the result can hide overfishing or create false compliance signals. Attackers may target logbooks, onboard devices, or back-end portals to corrupt the record chain; defenders respond with signed logs, role-based access, audit trails, and manual fallback checks. In short, overfishing is a resource problem, but trustworthy data is what lets organizations detect and prevent it.
