OT availability is the ability of operational technology systems to stay reachable and functional for control, monitoring, and maintenance. In industrial environments, availability is often the first security priority because a stopped controller, broken discovery service, or unreachable device can interrupt production even if no data is stolen.
Attackers can threaten OT availability with crashes, packet floods, malformed protocol messages, or configuration changes that make devices harder to manage. Defenders focus on segmentation, access control, patching, and resilient device design so local services cannot be abused to take equipment offline. In practice, even “small” bugs in discovery or management protocols can become serious when they disrupt visibility, commissioning, or plant-floor communications.
