An origin validation error is a software flaw where a program accepts data, files, or commands without properly checking that they came from a trusted source. Instead of verifying who sent the input or where it originated, the application acts on it as if it were legitimate.
This matters because many attacks depend on tricking software into trusting the wrong origin. In local setup or provisioning tools, a nearby attacker or another user on the same workstation may be able to influence file operations, alter installer behavior, or trigger unwanted changes during a sensitive setup window. In defenses, the fix is to validate the source of inputs, enforce strict trust boundaries, and treat installation tools as security-critical code. Patching affected software and limiting who can access setup systems reduces the risk of origin-based abuse.
