Orientation sensing measures an object’s direction or angle in space, such as its tilt or rotation. Sensors may estimate orientation from motion, gravity, magnetic fields, or changes detected across a flexible surface. In systems that track shape and movement, orientation provides information beyond whether an object is merely present or moving.
In cyber security, orientation data can affect the behavior of connected devices, including robots, headsets, and industrial equipment. Incorrect or manipulated sensor readings may cause a system to misinterpret position or movement, while noisy data can disrupt tracking. Defenses include validating sensor inputs against other measurements, monitoring for implausible changes, and protecting sensor-to-device communications. These measures help preserve the integrity of the physical data that software uses to make decisions.
