Opt-in is a consent model where a person must give prior permission before an organization may contact them or process their data for a specific purpose. In practice, the default is no action until approval is recorded. The permission should be linked to the exact activity it covers, such as a marketing campaign, phone call, or data use.
In cyber security and privacy operations, opt-in matters because consent is a control, not just a legal formality. Attackers may abuse weak consent flows to collect data, enroll victims in unwanted services, or hide unauthorized outreach inside trusted business systems. Defenders use opt-in records, logging, and approval workflows to prove that access or processing was allowed at the time it happened. That evidence helps detect stale permissions, scope creep, and misuse of customer data.
