Opinion Summarization

An NLP task that compresses multiple subjective reviews into a short summary.

Opinion summarization is an NLP task that compresses many subjective texts, such as reviews or survey comments, into a short summary. In cyber security, it matters because the summary can become the main interface to untrusted user-generated content. If attackers can seed spam, skewed ratings, or prompt-injection text into the input corpus, the model may amplify the attacker’s framing or hide important complaints. Even without direct manipulation, a fluent summary can still be misleading if it overweights the majority view and drops minority opinions.

Defenders treat the review text as untrusted input and check more than readability. Useful controls include aspect-based summaries, provenance labels, links to the source reviews, and coverage checks that measure whether dissent and edge cases are preserved. This helps prevent a generated blurb from becoming a trust filter that changes user decisions.
