An operational window is the limited period during which an event’s systems, staff, and support processes must work reliably. In cyber security, it describes a time-bound environment where availability, coordination, and fast response matter more than long-term flexibility. For mega-events, that window may be only a few days or hours, but the consequences of failure can be immediate and highly visible.
This matters because attackers often target short, high-pressure periods when teams are busy, access is temporary, and changes are happening quickly. A phishing message, account misuse, or service disruption during the operational window can cause delays, confusion, or loss of trust even without a full breach. Defenders plan for this by hardening critical systems, limiting access, rehearsing incident response, and monitoring closely so small issues do not become event-wide problems.
