Operating cash flow

Cash generated by normal business operations after expenses and working capital changes.

Operating cash flow is the cash a company generates from its normal business activities after paying operating expenses and accounting for changes in working capital. It is a practical measure of whether a business can fund day-to-day operations from money it actually receives, rather than relying on financing or accounting profit alone.

In cyber security, operating cash flow matters because secure products and services require ongoing investment in engineering, monitoring, incident response, compliance, and customer support. A vendor with healthy operating cash flow is often better positioned to maintain logging, access controls, vulnerability management, and secure deployment options such as cloud, on-premise, or hybrid environments. For buyers, it is also a signal of business stability: a company that consistently generates cash is more likely to sustain security controls, patching, and governance over time. It does not prove a product is secure, but it helps show whether the vendor can support secure operations at scale.
