Open-flow

A flow-data approach built around open or widely supported network telemetry formats.

Open-flow is a flow-data approach built on open or widely supported network telemetry formats. Instead of capturing full packet contents, it records communication summaries such as source and destination, ports, timing, byte counts, and protocol details. Because the format is broadly supported, defenders can collect data from different routers, switches, sensors, and platforms without locking themselves into one vendor’s proprietary pipeline.

In cyber security, open-flow matters because flow records are lightweight and useful at scale. They help teams spot scanning, unusual east-west movement, data exfiltration, and command-and-control traffic, especially when full packet capture is too expensive or noisy. In real defenses, open-flow data feeds SIEMs, threat hunting workflows, and anomaly detection systems. In attacks, defenders may rely on it to notice suspicious connections even when payloads are encrypted or unavailable. Its main tradeoff is detail: it is excellent for visibility and baselining, but it does not replace full packet inspection when deep content analysis is needed.
