Opacity

The difficulty of understanding how a model or decision process produced its result.

Opacity is the difficulty of understanding how a model, algorithm, or decision process produced its result. In cyber security, opacity matters because defenders need to know why a system flagged a file, blocked a user, or denied access, and attackers may try to hide malicious logic inside complex, hard-to-review systems.

Opaque systems can be risky in automated security tools, fraud scoring, access control, and profiling. If analysts cannot trace inputs, weights, rules, or intermediate steps, they may miss bias, configuration errors, or tampering. Attackers also benefit from opacity when they embed malware in models, abuse hidden features, or exploit black-box services that are hard to audit. Good defenses reduce opacity with logging, explainable outputs, independent review, reproducible models, and human oversight, so decisions can be challenged and corrected.
