Online stage

A tournament phase played remotely over the internet.

An online stage is a tournament phase played remotely over the internet rather than at a shared physical venue. In esports, this means players connect from separate locations, and organizers must coordinate servers, schedules, identity checks, and communications so matches start and finish reliably.

From a cyber-security view, the online stage matters because it expands the attack surface. Remote play can be affected by credential theft, account takeover, matchmaking abuse, DDoS attacks, impersonation, and misconfigured platforms. Defenders reduce risk with strong authentication, verified accounts, protected servers, rate limiting, and clear match procedures. The term also appears in operational security discussions because even without a breach, delays or confusion in an online stage can disrupt a tournament as effectively as a technical failure.
