Null reverse-path

A MAIL FROM:<> value that SMTP permits for certain message types, such as bounce-related mail.

A null reverse-path is an SMTP envelope sender of MAIL FROM:<>. SMTP allows this empty sender for special cases, especially bounce messages and other mail that must not generate a further delivery loop. It is separate from the visible From: header that users see, so an empty envelope sender does not automatically mean the message is fake or malformed.

In cyber security, this matters because defenders often use envelope data as part of trust decisions. Attackers may try to abuse a standards-legal null reverse-path to slip past filters, trigger weaker policy handling, or make a message look less suspicious during transport checks. Good defenses compare the envelope sender, message headers, and authentication results such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC together. By treating MAIL FROM:<> as one signal among many, mail systems can handle legitimate bounces while reducing opportunities for spoofing and internal-looking phishing.
