Notification controls are settings that reduce, filter, bundle, or silence alerts from apps, browsers, devices, and security tools. In practice, they decide when a user sees a banner, badge, sound, or push message, and when those prompts are held back. In cyber security, these controls matter because too many alerts create “notification fatigue,” making people more likely to ignore warnings or approve prompts without checking them.
Attackers can exploit that fatigue by sending repeated login prompts, fake security notices, or push-based approval requests until a user clicks through reflexively. Defenders use notification controls to limit noise from low-value events, prioritize critical alerts, and keep security messages visible and trustworthy. The risk is balance: if controls are too strict, important warnings may be missed; if they are too loose, users stop paying attention. Good notification design helps security teams and end users notice real threats faster.
