Nipkow disk

a rotating disk with apertures used to scan an image mechanically.

A Nipkow disk is a rotating disk with carefully placed apertures that scans an image one line at a time. As the disk turns, each opening samples a different part of the scene or projected picture, and the eye reconstructs the image through persistence of vision. It was a key mechanism in early mechanical television and remains a clear example of how timing and geometry can encode visual information.

In cyber security, the term matters because many defenses and attacks depend on understanding how devices emit, sample, or reconstruct signals. Mechanical scanning systems can be analyzed in hardware reverse engineering, optical testing, and side-channel research, where the goal is to observe what a system leaks through light or motion. A Nipkow-disk setup can also appear in labs as a controllable display or sensing platform for demonstrations, debugging, or security experiments involving cameras, projectors, and optical isolation.
