A network traffic analysis platform is software that ingests mirrored or copied network traffic, then reconstructs sessions, protocols, and key metadata for security monitoring. It helps defenders see who talked to whom, when, and sometimes what was exchanged, without relying only on endpoint logs.
These platforms matter because they often sit at a privileged observation point. In defense, they support detection, hunting, and incident response by turning raw packets into searchable telemetry and alerts. In attack scenarios, they are high-value targets: if an intruder compromises the platform, they may learn internal communications, monitoring coverage, and response workflows. They may also try to alter or suppress evidence, which can undermine trust in logs and timelines. Good protection includes strong authentication, strict segmentation, minimal access, independent backups, and separate verification sources so security teams can confirm what the platform reports.
