Network security policy management (NSPM) is the set of tools and processes used to review, approve, organize, and audit network access rules such as firewall and security group policies. It helps security teams keep policy aligned with business needs while preserving a record of who changed what, when, and why.
NSPM matters because network rules tend to accumulate over time. Temporary exceptions become permanent, redundant rules create rule bloat, and outdated entries can leave unintended paths open. In an attack, those weak controls may let an intruder move laterally or reach sensitive systems. In defense, NSPM platforms help compare intended policy with live configuration, detect unauthorized changes, model the impact of a rule before it is deployed, and verify what traffic is actually reachable across complex or multi-vendor networks.
