Network allowlisting

A control that permits connections only to approved domains or addresses.

Network allowlisting is a defensive control that lets a system connect only to approved domains, IP addresses, or ports. Everything not explicitly listed is blocked. Unlike traditional blocking rules, allowlisting starts from a default-deny posture, which is especially useful when you want to tightly constrain where a host, service, or test environment can send traffic.

In cyber security, allowlisting matters because many attacks depend on outbound network access: malware phones home, steals data, downloads payloads, or reaches command-and-control servers. In defensive operations, it can limit exposure from compromised machines, reduce accidental access to live services, and help isolate sensitive testbeds. In AI cyber evaluations, network allowlisting is a containment measure that keeps tools and agents from reaching unauthorized targets. If the list is too broad, or if DNS, proxies, or alternate routes are not covered, a supposedly isolated environment can still make real external connections.
