Negotiation window

a short period when attackers may demand contact before publication.

A negotiation window is the short period an extortion crew gives a victim to make contact before the attackers publish stolen data or escalate pressure. In ransomware and leak-site extortion, this window is often framed as a deadline, but it is really a coercion tactic: the attackers want to force fast decisions while defenders are still confirming what happened.

This matters because the countdown can create operational and legal stress even when the scope of compromise is unclear. Defenders should treat attacker messages as leverage, not proof, preserve logs and evidence, and coordinate incident response, legal, and communications teams around verified facts. In real attacks, the negotiation window is used to push payments, concessions, or public statements before the organization has finished assessing risk.
