The National Airspace System (NAS) is the interconnected aviation environment that keeps flight operations working together. It includes aircraft, airports, air traffic control, ground systems, communications links, navigation services, and operational support infrastructure. Because so many parts depend on one another, the NAS is not a single machine but a large, tightly coupled system.
In cybersecurity, the NAS matters because a weakness in one component can affect safety, scheduling, data integrity, or operational continuity across the whole network. Attackers may target airport IT, aviation communications, maintenance systems, or service providers to disrupt coordination or gain visibility into operations. Defenders protect the NAS with segmentation, strong identity controls, monitoring, resilient backups, and coordinated incident response. Clear ownership and consistent implementation are especially important, since security gaps can spread quickly across shared aviation assets.
