named

The BIND daemon process that handles DNS service functions.

named is the main BIND daemon that provides DNS service functions. It can run as an authoritative server, a recursive resolver, or both, depending on configuration. In practice, it receives DNS queries, looks up or caches answers, and applies features such as DNSSEC validation.

In cyber security, named matters because it sits on a critical trust boundary. If attackers trigger bugs in query processing, cache handling, or validation logic, they may cause service crashes, denial of service, incorrect DNS answers, or cache poisoning effects. Defenders monitor named for unusual SERVFAIL spikes, resource exhaustion, and crashes, and they reduce risk by patching quickly, limiting exposed resolver features, and separating authoritative-only systems from recursive, DNSSEC-validating ones.
