Multi Round-Trip Requests

A mechanism for multi-step exchanges without keeping a persistent connection open.

Multi Round-Trip Requests are a protocol pattern for multi-step exchanges that do not rely on a long-lived session or persistent connection. Instead of keeping state inside an open channel, the server and client can continue a conversation through a series of ordinary request-response messages. Each step carries the information needed to resume or advance the interaction.

In cyber security, this matters because state is often where trust, authorization, and workflow assumptions hide. When continuation state is explicit, defenders can inspect it, log it, and enforce policy at each step. In AI and API integrations, this is useful for workflows that need clarification, approval, or additional input before completing an action. It also creates risk if attackers can tamper with continuation data, replay earlier steps, or confuse routing between services. Security teams should validate who is allowed to continue a round-trip, where state is stored, and whether each message is authenticated and bound to the correct user and context.
