MTSA

The Maritime Transportation Security Act, a U.S. law that sets security requirements for certain maritime operations.

MTSA, the Maritime Transportation Security Act, is a U.S. law that establishes security requirements for parts of the maritime transportation system, including vessels, ports, and related facilities. It gives regulators a framework for identifying protected assets, setting security plans, and enforcing baseline safeguards for physical access and operations.

In cyber security, MTSA matters because maritime environments now depend on networked systems, remote maintenance, monitoring tools, and operational technology. A waiver or exemption under MTSA may apply to one security duty, but it does not automatically remove separate cyber obligations. Defenders use MTSA-based compliance to check access control, segmentation, logging, vendor connections, and resilience of critical systems. Attackers target these environments because a weak link in a port or vessel can disrupt cargo flow, safety functions, and essential services.
