Modular storage

An arrangement of interchangeable parts designed to fit different items and spaces.

Modular storage is a storage arrangement built from interchangeable parts that can be mixed, replaced, or expanded to fit different items and spaces. In computing, the same idea describes storage systems made from reusable components such as drives, containers, volumes, or backup modules that can be added without redesigning the whole system.

In cyber security, modular storage matters because flexibility can improve resilience. Defenders use it to segment sensitive data, rotate encrypted backups, isolate evidence, and scale capacity while keeping access controls consistent. A modular design can also make it easier to patch, replace, or remove a compromised component instead of rebuilding an entire storage stack. Attackers may abuse the same pattern by splitting stolen data across temporary stores, swapping exfiltration backends, or staging malware tools on removable or disposable storage layers. The security lesson is that interchangeable parts are useful only when each part is authenticated, encrypted, and monitored.
