Modular implant

Malware built from separate components that can be loaded or activated as needed.

A modular implant is malware built from separate pieces, where a small loader or core component can fetch, decrypt, or activate extra functions only when needed. Instead of one large executable doing everything, the implant is split into modules for persistence, credential theft, data collection, command and control, or lateral movement. This design makes the malware more flexible and easier for operators to tailor to different targets.

In cyber security, modular implants matter because they reduce the static footprint defenders can detect. A campaign may deliver a quiet first stage and reserve heavier capabilities for high-value systems, which can delay discovery and complicate signature-based detection. Defenders look for the behavior around the implant, such as unusual module loading, unexpected network retrievals, process injection, or browser and system abuse after initial access. Monitoring these activity chains is often more effective than hunting for one fixed file hash.
