Model calibration

Tuning a detection system so its alerts are accurate enough to remain useful.

Model calibration is the process of tuning a detection system so its confidence scores and alerts line up with reality. A well-calibrated model does not just label something “suspicious”; it estimates risk in a way that is reliable enough for users or security tools to act on. In practice, calibration helps decide when to warn, when to block, and when to stay silent.

In cyber security, calibration matters because noisy alerts get ignored and weak alerts miss real threats. Anti-phishing filters, fraud detectors, and on-device scam warnings all depend on it. If a model is overconfident, harmless messages may be flagged too often and users lose trust. If it is underconfident, scam messages may slip through. Good calibration is especially important in fast-changing attacks, where fraudsters constantly rewrite messages to evade detection.
