Mobile device management

A policy and software layer used to deploy updates and enforce settings across managed devices.

Mobile device management, or MDM, is the policy and software layer organizations use to control phones and tablets at scale. It lets administrators enforce security settings, require passcodes and encryption, install or remove apps, and push operating-system updates to enrolled devices. MDM can also check device health, quarantine noncompliant devices, and erase corporate data if a device is lost or compromised.

In cyber security, MDM matters because mobile devices often handle email, documents, and authentication tokens. Fast patch deployment is especially important after a serious OS or framework flaw, since users may delay updates on their own. With MDM, defenders can shorten that window and reduce exposure across an entire fleet. Attackers may try to exploit unpatched devices before an update is installed, or target weak MDM configurations to weaken controls. Well-managed MDM is therefore a key defense for limiting both initial compromise and post-compromise access.
