Micro-payment

A very small financial transaction that may be uneconomic on conventional payment rails because fees and settlement costs can dominate the value.

A micro-payment is a financial transaction for a very small amount. On conventional payment systems, fixed processing fees, settlement delays, and operational costs can outweigh the value transferred, making frequent tiny purchases impractical.

In cyber security, micro-payments matter when software agents or online services buy small amounts of data, computing, or model access automatically. High-volume machine payments can create risks such as unauthorized spending, repeated charges, or abuse of delegated payment credentials. Defenses include limiting an agent’s spending authority, requiring explicit authorization for defined transaction types, using idempotency controls to prevent duplicate processing, and keeping auditable records. Alternative settlement methods may reduce payment friction, but they do not replace safeguards for identity, permissions, and transaction integrity.
