Measurement validity

The degree to which a test actually measures what it claims to measure.

Measurement validity is the degree to which a test actually measures what it claims to measure. In cyber security, that means asking whether a score, scan, or exercise reflects real exposure, not just performance on a narrow test.

It matters because weak validity creates false confidence. A vulnerability scan may look “green” while missing exploitable paths, or a phishing metric may improve because users learned the test pattern rather than because they became safer. Attackers also exploit low-validity measurements by tailoring behavior to the checklist, hiding from simple detectors, or triggering only the signals a tool expects.

Defenders improve validity by using multiple measurements, realistic scenarios, hidden test cases, and manual review of edge cases. A valid security test should separate true capability from overfitting, gaming, and benchmark drift, so leaders can trust the result when making deployment and risk decisions.
