Measurable criteria

Specific test conditions used to judge performance consistently.

Measurable criteria are specific, repeatable test conditions used to judge whether a system performs as intended. Instead of vague goals like “fast” or “secure,” they define what is being tested, under what conditions, and how success is counted. This makes results comparable across different tools, teams, or time periods.

In cybersecurity, measurable criteria matter because defenders must prove that controls work, not just claim they do. For example, a backup test might measure restore time and data loss, while an incident response drill might measure detection time, containment time, and accuracy of alerts. Attackers also exploit weak criteria: if a security team only checks a control in ideal conditions, an attacker may bypass it with abnormal traffic, malformed input, or timing tricks. Clear criteria expose those edge cases and help security teams benchmark detection, hardening, and recovery in a consistent way.
