Malware analysis

The process of studying suspicious software to understand what it does and how it behaves.

Malware analysis is the process of studying suspicious software to understand what it does, how it behaves, and what systems or data it targets. Analysts may inspect a sample statically, by reading code and embedded strings, or dynamically, by running it in a sandbox or virtual machine and watching its network activity, file changes, and process creation. The goal is to turn an unknown binary or script into actionable intelligence.

This matters because attackers rely on hidden behavior, delayed execution, and anti-analysis tricks to evade detection. Good analysis helps defenders identify indicators of compromise, block malicious infrastructure, and write better detections. In practice, malware analysis often appears in triage workflows where untrusted attachments or downloads are isolated before they reach production systems. It is most effective when paired with logging, monitoring, and strict containment, since no single environment can guarantee safety.
