macOS

Apple’s desktop operating system, often targeted because it can store sensitive work and authentication data.

macOS is Apple’s desktop operating system for Mac computers. It provides the user interface, file system, security controls, and application environment used by employees, developers, and administrators. Like other modern operating systems, it stores data that can be valuable to attackers, including browser sessions, local documents, SSH keys, API tokens, wallet software, and other authentication material.

In cyber security, macOS matters because a compromised Mac can become a bridge to much more than one workstation. Attackers often target high-trust Macs used for finance, software development, crypto operations, or system administration, then search for credentials and secrets that enable lateral movement into servers, cloud services, or signing systems. Defenders reduce this risk with strong device encryption, patching, endpoint monitoring, least-privilege access, separate admin accounts, and controls that limit where keys and tokens are stored. On macOS, protecting the secrets on the machine is often just as important as detecting the malware itself.
