Lost-wax process

A method for making precise metal castings.

The lost-wax process is a precision metal casting method, also known as investment casting. A wax model is coated with a ceramic shell, the wax is melted out, and molten metal is poured into the remaining cavity. The result is a highly accurate part with fine detail and complex shapes.

In cyber security, the term matters because foundries that use this process depend on design files, tooling data, production schedules, and quality records. If attackers steal or alter those files, they can disrupt manufacturing, damage product quality, or expose valuable industrial intellectual property. Ransomware can also stop casting operations by locking engineering systems or production planning. Defenders should protect CAD and production networks, restrict access to sensitive designs, and keep offline backups so operations can recover without trusting attacker claims or modified files.
