Loot directory

a storage folder used by criminals to collect stolen files, credentials, or artifacts.

A loot directory is a storage folder criminals use to collect stolen data after compromise. It may hold credentials, recovery phrases, screenshots, browser data, session tokens, logs, or other artifacts gathered by malware, phishing kits, or an operator’s manual exfiltration. The folder often acts as a staging area before the data is sold, reused, or moved to another system.

In cyber security, loot directories matter because their structure can reveal an attacker’s workflow. Naming patterns, timestamps, and subfolders may show how victims are separated, what data types are prioritized, and whether the operator is running a one-off intrusion or a larger theft pipeline. Defenders and investigators look for these folders in exposed servers, infected hosts, and cloud storage to map scope and recover evidence. Finding a loot directory can also indicate that sensitive material was already harvested, even if the malware itself is gone.
